What Is the Closest Airport to Tignes?

Chambéry is the closest airport to Tignes, 140 km away and about 2 hours’ drive. Most travellers fly into Geneva instead — the nearest airport with a full international schedule — 180 km away and about 2h30 to 2h45’s drive.

Tignes sits at 2,100 m at the head of the Tarentaise valley in the French Alps, and shares the Espace Killy ski area with Val d’Isère. There is no airport and no railway station in the resort itself, so every arrival ends with a road journey up the valley. This page sets out the realistic options, with the actual distances and times.

Which airport is closest to Tignes?

By distance, Chambéry (CMF) is the closest at 140 km, about 2 hours. Grenoble (GNB) follows at 170 km, and Geneva (GVA) at 180 km.

In practice most travellers fly into Geneva. It is only 40 km further than Chambéry, the drive takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, and it is the only one of the three with a full international schedule — including direct flights from the UK and connections from North America. Chambéry and Grenoble are seasonal airports that mainly handle winter charters, so a cheap fare there often depends on the week you travel.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry (LYS), 220 km and about 2 hours 45 minutes, is the other serious option and the natural choice if you are connecting from Paris. Turin and Milan Malpensa, on the Italian side, are 275 km away and used mostly by travellers already in Italy.

Arriving by train

Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the end of the Tarentaise line and the closest station to Tignes, 30 km away. In winter it is served by direct TGV services; check the current timetable. From the platform you still need the last 30 km and roughly 900 m of climb to the resort, by transfer, taxi or seasonal bus.

Moûtiers, 56 km out, sees more direct services but leaves a longer road journey.

Travelling from North America

Mercedes V-Class on the mountain road up to Tignes

There is no direct flight to Chambéry or Grenoble from North America. The usual routing is an overnight flight from New York, Newark or Boston into Geneva, either direct or connecting through Paris, London, Zurich or Amsterdam. Overnight flights land in the morning, which means you can be in Tignes by early afternoon and collect your lift pass and rental equipment the same day.

Two things worth planning for. Saturday is changeover day across the whole Tarentaise between January and March, and the valley road is busy all morning — a Sunday or midweek arrival is noticeably calmer. And if you are connecting in Europe, build in enough time: a missed connection at Paris or Zurich is the single most common cause of a late arrival in the resort.

Getting from the airport to the resort

A private transfer takes you from the airport to your address in one journey, with no intermediate stops, and the price is fixed for the vehicle rather than per person — which is what makes it competitive for a family or a group. A shared shuttle costs less per seat but serves several resorts in turn. Buses run to fixed timetables that rarely match a flight. Hiring a car is possible, but the last climb to Tignes in winter requires winter tyres and, in heavy snow, chains.

Yann Taxi runs private transfers from all of the above, in a 7-seat Mercedes V-Class, with ski equipment included and a fixed price agreed before you travel: from Geneva (from €450) and from Lyon (from €550).

What is the closest airport to Tignes?

Chambéry (CMF) is the closest at 140 km and about 2 hours’ drive, followed by Grenoble (GNB) at 170 km and Geneva (GVA) at 180 km. Most travellers use Geneva anyway, because it is the only one with a full international schedule and is just 45 minutes further than Chambéry.

What are the airports near Tignes?

Chambéry (140 km, about 2 hours) is the nearest, followed by Grenoble (170 km) and Geneva (180 km, about 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 45 minutes). Most travellers choose Geneva for its wider international schedule; Lyon (220 km) and Turin or Milan (275 km) are further options for connections.

How do you get to Tignes from Geneva Airport?

By road: 180 km and about 2 hours 45 minutes via Annecy, Albertville and Bourg-Saint-Maurice. Options are a private transfer, a shared shuttle, a bus on a fixed timetable, or a hire car. There is no rail link to Tignes itself.

Is there a train station in Tignes?

No. The nearest station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 30 km away and 35 to 40 minutes by road, at the end of the Tarentaise line. In winter it is served by direct TGV services; check the current timetable.

How long is the drive from Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Tignes?

30 km and about 35 to 40 minutes on the D902, climbing roughly 900 m. It is the shortest approach to the resort from the valley floor.

How far is Val d’Isère from Tignes?

12 km, about 15 minutes by road. The two resorts share the Espace Killy ski area and are served on the same terms by transfer.
